Demolisher Defense Tips - How to Survive Explosive Zombie Attacks

Demolishers are the most base-threatening zombie in 7 Days to Die. Here's exactly how to counter them before they level your base.

8 min read

The sound of a demolisher’s charge is one of the most feared sounds in 7 Days to Die. These massive zombies carry explosive payloads that can level wood and cobblestone structures in seconds.

Here’s everything you need to know to survive Demolisher encounters.

What Makes Demolishers Dangerous

Unlike standard zombies that deal block damage through punching, Demolishers:

  1. Detonate on death - killing them near your base triggers the explosion
  2. Charge explosively - they can suicide-charge specific blocks
  3. Ignore trap damage - blade traps don’t stop their detonation
  4. Scale with game stage - more frequent at higher difficulty

Calculate your demolisher risk with the Horde Night Planner.

Defense Strategy 1: Kill At Distance

The safest counter is eliminating demolishers before they reach your base perimeter.

Required:

  • Sniper Rifle (.50 cal) with at least Q4 quality
  • 30+ rounds of .50 cal AP ammo per demolisher
  • Clear sightlines of 30+ blocks from your shooting position

Demolishers are large and slow-moving - easy to identify and target early. Train yourself to spot them by the distinctive yellow chest markings and larger frame.

Defense Strategy 2: Isolated Detonation Zones

Design your approach to include a “sacrificial zone” - an area of expendable blocks where demolishers will detonate before reaching your core structure.

Design:

  • Outer ring of cheap cobblestone blocks placed 5–8 blocks from your main wall
  • These blocks attract demolisher attention and absorb the explosion
  • Replace outer ring after each horde night (cheap to rebuild)

Defense Strategy 3: Steel Reinforced Core

If demolishers are inevitable at your game stage, upgrade your critical structural blocks to steel.

Steel block HP: 8,000 per block
Demolisher explosion damage: ~3,000–5,000 radius
Result: Steel blocks survive one demolisher blast

Check what materials need upgrading with the Base Stability Calculator.

Defense Strategy 4: Auto-Turret Priority

Auto-turrets with AP rounds are extremely effective against demolishers. They:

  • Engage immediately without requiring your attention
  • Deal enough damage to kill before the charge builds
  • Cover approach angles you can’t watch manually

Check your power grid capacity with the Electricity Planner.

Building Checklist Before Demolisher Waves

  • At least one concrete or steel wall layer on all approach sides
  • Auto-turret with full ammo covering primary approach
  • Sniper position with 20+ .50 cal rounds
  • Sacrificial outer blocks placed and expendable
  • All critical support pillars are steel or concrete

Reading Your Horde Readiness

Run the Horde Readiness Score before any horde where demolishers are expected. The tool specifically flags low base stability as a critical risk when your game stage indicates demolisher probability.

Don’t face a demolisher-level horde with a cobblestone base. It won’t end well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Demolishers begin appearing once your game stage exceeds 100, with increasing probability up to a cap of ~20% of horde zombies at high game stages. Expect your first one around Day 35–42 on Warrior difficulty.

A demolisher detonation deals roughly 3,000–5,000 damage to nearby blocks in a radius. It can destroy wood and cobblestone blocks instantly, and significantly damage concrete. Steel blocks can survive one blast.

Headshots from distance before it reaches your base. A sniper rifle (.50 cal) or hunting rifle with AP ammo can kill most demolishers in 2–3 headshots. If they reach your base, explosive damage becomes unavoidable.
