Surviving a blood moon in 7 Days to Die comes down to one thing: having the right base before the horde arrives. The best designs funnel zombies, maximize trap efficiency, and keep you alive through all three waves.
Why Base Design Matters So Much
Zombie AI in 7DTD follows a predictable path - they always attack the block with the highest structural integrity closest to you. This means with the right layout, you can force every zombie through a single corridor lined with blade traps and barbed wire.
Get this right and even an Insane-difficulty horde becomes manageable. Get it wrong and Day 7 will end your run.
1. The Elevated Kill Box (Beginner - Day 1–21)
Materials needed: ~200 cobblestone, 20 blade traps, 50 barbed wire
The classic starter base. Build a 3×3 room elevated 7 blocks off the ground on a cobblestone pillar. Create one ramp approach lined with spike/blade traps. Zombies walk up the ramp, hit the traps, and get funneled into your kill zone.
Pros: Cheap, quick to build, easy to repair
Cons: Vulnerable to demolisher impacts at higher game stages
Use the Base Stability Calculator to check if your pillar needs reinforcement.
2. The Underground Bunker (Intermediate - Day 14+)
Dig 10 blocks down, create a 5×5 room with a reinforced hatch. The horde cannot reach you underground. You fight from the hatch opening with a shotgun.
Pros: Demolishers cannot touch you underground
Cons: Requires significant pre-horde digging; limited space for traps
3. The Moat Base (Intermediate - Day 21+)
Surround your base with a 3-wide, 5-deep moat. Zombies fall in and become trapped. Place blade traps at the moat bottom.
Pros: Extremely effective against all zombie types
Cons: Time-consuming to build; requires concrete or steel walls to prevent collapse
4. The Hatches and Ramps Design (Advanced - Day 28+)
Multiple hatch-based kill corridors on different levels. Zombies must navigate complex paths while you engage from above.
Pros: Highly efficient ammo usage
Cons: Complex build; requires planning
5. The Steel Tower (Late Game - Day 49+)
Full steel construction, 10 blocks high, with electric fences at the base and auto-turrets at the top.
Use the Electricity Planner to calculate your generator requirements.
Pros: Nearly indestructible
Cons: Requires significant steel resources
6. The Courtyard Trap Farm (Multiplayer - Day 35+)
A large courtyard with multiple trap corridors for 2–4 player groups. Each player defends a corridor while traps handle overflow.
Use the Multiplayer Scaling Calculator to understand how zombie counts change with your group size.
7. The Rooftop Fortress (All Stages)
Build on an existing tall POI. Reinforce the roof with concrete, seal all entry points with metal doors, and fight from the rooftop.
Pros: Reuses existing structure
Cons: May have weak points from the POI’s original design
What to Do Before Every Horde Night
- Run the Horde Night Planner to estimate zombie count and ammo needs
- Repair all damaged blocks (check the Base Stability Calculator)
- Stock triple the ammo you think you need
- Place fresh blade traps - they wear down between hordes
The difference between surviving and dying on blood moon is almost always preparation, not skill.
